Dear Chairman,
The International Fis Carving Cup Committee wanted to bring to your and to the council's attention, a new proposal concerning the carving discipline, which, this year completes its 10th year.
We, in fact, wanted to propose a new type of carving races, which, as we think, could have the potential to make the carving races more interesting to many alpine skiers, because of the lack of most of the differences that today separate these disciplines, such as the sticks, the three race lines, the race suit.
The SPEED CARVING (or SUPER CARVING) sees just one boa for each turn and a wide radius which allows a good speed - preserving anyway in the carving way of skiing, with a different line than the giant slalom would see.

It would be possible to use the sticks and also the regular race suit. The speed would be slightly lower than during a giant slalom, due to the smaller radius in the turns.
The course wouldn't have more than 25 turns, that way it remains a short competition, were, this time, only the race time counts.
The traditional carving competition would change its name in SLALOM CARVING. The formula would be changed in 2 qualifying races and a final race featuring the first 10 men and the first 10 women. Until now, there was also a semi final with the first 30 men and 10 women.

With these changes it would be possible to run two races during a competition week end: on Saturday the SLALOM CARVING and on Sunday the SPEED CARVING. The formula of the Speed Carving schedules as well two qualifying runs and one final run for the top ten athletes.
Moreover this would make it possible to have a third competition: the combined. This means to be able to assign the points of three different races and not just of one and that would improve the suspense for the general ranking.

The SPEED CARVING (or SUPER CARVING) could be a good way to interest also those athletes, which since now were doubtful because of the huge differences between the Carving races and the rest of the Alpine disciplines. Many World Cup Athletes today already train with the buoys to improve their technique for the giant slalom, and the Speed Carving follows this idea.

During the summer the CO FCC will do new tests and write the rules for setting distances and methods. Rules that will be approved by the federal authorities, and than submitted to the Alpine Committee during the September meeting for approval.
In a second place the CO FCC is also asking to you, the Chairman, and the FIS Council, to officialize the FIS Carving points, we are keeping since the first races (they fix the start order and the possibility to compete).

This opportunity would honour the agonistic commitment of the athletes, which of course would at this point pay the fee for the assignment of the FIS code, payment you gently didn't ask since now.
Official FIS points would also help to eliminate all little doubts concerning the status of the Carving races.

We are convinced that after 10 years of activity it is important to create something new and positive to interest more athletes, to entertain the public, the media and the sponsors.

Stimatissimo Presidente,
Il comitato Internazionale Carving Cup desidera sottoporre alla sua attenzione e a quella dei membri del Consiglio dello Sci Alpino FIS, una nuova proposta agonistica sempre sotto il “cappello” del carving, che, ricordiamo, ha quest'anno compiuto 10 anni di attività.

E' stata infatti individuata una seconda tipologia di gara che a parere del Comitato carving ha la potenzialità per avvicinare alla specialità molti sciatori, poiché non presenta quelle differenze importanti che oggi separano il carving dalle specialità tradizionali (senza bastoni, tre linee di curva, tuta da gara proibita, etc).
Si tratta dello SPEED CARVING (o SUPER CARVING) e prevede un tracciato con una sola boa per ogni curva e un arco di curva ampio con una buona velocità, ma sempre con un raggio tipicamente carving, quindi la linea è decisamente differente rispetto a quella di un gigante. E' possibile utilizzare i bastoni e la tuta da gara. La velocità è leggermente inferiore a quella dello slalom gigante poiché si tratta di una linea di curva più chiusa e rotonda. Il tracciato di gara non supera le 25 curve, quindi rimane sempre una gara breve, dove, in questo caso vale solamente il tempo.
La gara carving tradizionale cambierebbe nome: SLALOM CARVING. In questo caso viene modificato l'impianto di gara: due manche di qualificazione e una finale con i primi 10 uomini e le prime 10 donne. Finora era prevista una semifinale (30 uomini e 10 donne) prima della fionale.

Grazie a questo cambiamento in un week end si è in grado di organizzare 2 gare differenti: al sabato lo SLALOM CARVING e alla domenica lo SPEED CARVING (o Super Carving). Anche questa nuova specialità prevede due manche di qualifica e una finale con i/le top ten
Inoltre si crea la possibilità della combinata. Così in una tappa si possono assegnare i punti di tre gare anziché una e l'emozione della classifica generale rimane più viva e dinamica.

LO SPEED CARVING (o Super Carving) può essere una prova di grande promozione, capace di avvicinare con più facilità quegli agonisti che finora sono rimasti un po' titubanti per le caratteristiche così particolari del carving. Inoltre molti atleti di Coppa del Mondo oggi si allenano con le boe per affinare la tecnica del gigante e l'idea dello Speed Carving ricopre anche questa nuova attitudine
Il Comitato Internazionale Carving nei mesi estivi effettuerà nuovi test per scrivere nel dettaglio a regolamento le distanze e le metodologie si tracciatura. Regolamento che, dopo essere stato valutato dagli organi federali e certamente da Janez Flerè, sarà sottoposto alla commissione Sci Alpino FIS nel meeting di settembre per la definitiva approvazione.

In secondo luogo il Comitato Internazionale chiede anche a Lei Presidente e a tutti i Consiglieri la possibilità di rendere ufficiali i punteggi Carving FIS che abbiamo iniziato a tenere fin dalla prima gara (regolano anche l'ordine di partenza e la possibilità di partecipazione/iscrizione). Questa opportunità restituisce valore all'onore e all'impegno agonistico degli atleti che ovviamente sono disposti a procedere con il versamento della quota del codice Fis, finora gentilmente da voi concesso gratuitamente a scopo promozionale.

L'ufficialità dei punti Fis potrebbe contribuire fortemente a eliminare quei piccoli dubbi di legittimità che ancora avvolge la specialità Carving
Crediamo che dopo 10 anni si debba creare qualcosa di nuovo purché si tratti di innovazioni positive e noi siamo convinti che questa sia la strada giusta per accrescere il divertimento degli atleti, trasmettere interesse presso il pubblico degli appassionati, dei Media e certamente degli Sponsor.
